Climbing walls are constructed walls artificially with grips for hands and feet. These are used for indoor climbing, but it is also located outdoors. Many factors play a part in the stability of a climbing wall in Abu Dhabi, including the weight of the load, the direction of force, and the geometry of the wall and its spread out. A freestanding climbing wall may be the best choice for safety purposes.
If you’re planning to build a climbing wall, you’ll need to choose between plywood and oriented strand boards (OSB). While OSB is cheaper and lighter than plywood, it is more flexible and susceptible to moisture. Plywood, on the other hand, is stronger and can hold more weight. Consequently, plywood is a better choice for indoor and outdoor climbing walls.
An artificial climbing wall uses angle irons to connect the kicker struts to the wall panels. This mounting arrangement replaces the perimeter frame and creates an integral exterior surface. Alternatively, the wall panel can be of a different shape and may have a surface adapted to gripping by the climber.
Angle irons are available in six sizes. The smallest two are called “baby angles” and are typically used as fixed anchors. The remaining four sizes are used as climbing slings. The smaller sizes are typically hammered into rock and left as permanent anchors. In the 1970s, angle irons were used extensively in climbing walls.
Tapcon screws are a fastener used in climbing walls to attach a climbing hold to a block wall, wood, or concrete. They require a minimum embedment of one inch and a maximum of 1-3/4 inches. When installing the screws, measure the board’s thickness to determine the proper length.
Adhesive-backed felt strips:
Adhesive-backed felt strips are a great way to protect drywall when you take down a climbing wall. Although they’re not as durable as plywood or A/C boards, they save you money. The strips are about 0.68 inches thick, which is a good thickness for most climbing surfaces. If you’re building a climbing wall for adults, you’ll probably want a thicker strip.
When building a climbing wall, you should connect it to two or more studs. The more studs you can connect to, the more stability you’ll get. A simple bouldering wall must be attached to at least two studs. Make sure you connect the wall to ceiling joists as well. It’s also better to mount the wall on concrete instead of masonry.
